Carbon Farming Innovation Network
Goal: Reverse the climate crisis through agricultural carbon sequestration while restoring soil health, water quality and eco-system biodiversity, and improving global food security, farm economics and rural livelihoods.
About the Network
The Carbon Farming Innovation Network is a multi-stakeholder, cross-sector collaboration launched by the Center for Sustainability Solutions to drive carbon farming into mainstream agriculture as part of the global climate change solution. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a report in late 2018 underscoring the urgency of our current climate crisis and calls for "rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society" to avoid disastrous levels of global warming. We believe that carbon farming can play a significant role in reversing the climate crisis.
Carbon farming espouses methods of land, water, plant and animal management that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, increases production and sequesters carbon.
In addition to sequestering excess carbon in the atmosphere, carbon farming provides additional benefits including greater drought and flood resilience, improved water quality and availability. It also helps farmers harness natural fertility methods which reduces cost and decreases dependence on petro-chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Not only do carbon farming methods build resilience in the soil, they also protect rural communities, farmer’s quality of life and improves human health.
This Network seeks to quickly scale high impact carbon farming solutions through education, research, prototyping and investment.
Network Goal
Goal: Reverse the climate crisis through agricultural carbon sequestration while restoring soil health, water quality and eco-system biodiversity, and improving global food security, farm economics and rural livelihoods.
Metric: Achieve atmosphere CO2 concentrations below 280 ppm by 2050
Key Initiatives across Green America's Agriculture Networks
The Carbon Farming Innovation Network consists of over 40 leaders from across the supply chain actively participating in a set of integrated initiatives designed to shift the agriculture system at a transformational scale so we can quickly reach our goal.
The Carbon Farming Innovation Network has a distinct learning agenda, with meeting speakers, webinars and other opportunities to explore emerging science and market intelligence relevant to its network goal. However, the action agenda of the networks is shared, allowing for greater impact. In addition to the joint action across the networks on the initiatives, members use the deliverables from the initiatives for applications in their own work.
